Have you ever played the game where you list the top ten things you’d want if you were stuck on a deserted island? I recently talked about this game as an idea for becoming a minimalist family. You see, asking your children to talk about the things they love is much more fun than asking them what they’d want to give up or get rid of.

None of us really enjoy the thought of giving something up. But, we love the game of picking our favorite things.

When we played this the other night as a family, it dawned on me that you might be interested in knowing my top 10 things that I can’t live without. Because I would LOVE to know the top 10 things YOU can’t live without. Can you do me a favor and let me know what they are in the comments?

My Top 10 Things I Don't Want to Live Without

Oh, I also want to point out that I am only including THINGS in this list. My family and friends are way more important to me than anything on this list. Okay? I just don’t there to be any confusion and have someone think that I would choose my coffee maker over my daughter. That’s just crazy and this is supposed to be fun.

#1 Cappuccinos

Technically this is 2 things because it is my Nespresso machine and milk frother, but I'm planning to upgrade to this one soon so I'm keeping it as one.

Item number one on this list are cappuccinos. Yes, I have one every morning before the rest of my family wakes up. In fact, I am sitting alone in the early quiet hours, drinking my cappuccino (which is sadly almost gone), and writing this post. I achieve my perfect morning wake-me-up with a Nespresso machine and milk frother. Right now they are two separate things, but I am dying to upgrade to this one in a few months.

#2 Computer

I may have an addiction to my computer. It generally tends to go everywhere with me and I recently confessed I am trying to get over my workaholic tendencies. The “working in the coffeeshop" culture is not the same here in Munich and I often find myself as the lone person on a laptop if I have time between dropping my daughter off at kindergarten and heading to the gym. I guess I am also assuming there would be internet on this deserted island. Just go with me…it’s my list. :)

#3 iPhone

I’m going to date myself here, but I think I am just old enough to not be super addicted to my iPhone. Don’t get me wrong, I love it and I do struggle to not check it at the wrong times, but I didn’t have a cell phone until I was 19 and it was nothing like the ones today. Calls were super expensive, there were no camera capabilities, and texting didn’t exist. But, I now use my phone to take photos, read books, listen to podcasts, record videos, learn a new language, and call my family from around the world…so, yea, it’s still pretty important.

#4 Sustainable Water Bottle

I almost never leave my house without my water bottle. My current bottle is made of glass so it’s not the most travel friendly, but my goal is to fill it up at least 4 times a day so that I stay hydrated. To me it is easier than having to fill up a glass 8 times a day. Am I the only one who gets in the zone and then becomes too lazy or focused to get up and turn on the faucet?

#5 Face Moisturizer

I have to use face lotion every time I wash my face. I hate the feeling of tight skin and am just super uncomfortable if I don’t use it. I've had to switch to different brands throughout our travels, although I do make sure my moisturizer has an SPF. If you have a favorite face moisturizer you love, let me know in the comments.

#6 Contact Lenses

Just after college, I discovered that I became nearsighted. Once street signs started getting blurry while driving I finally got my eyes checked out and have been wearing contacts ever since. While I’m also okay with my glasses (and they would be better on the island) I love wearing normal (not prescription) sunglasses so the contacts are a must.

#7 Mascara

If I could only chose one makeup item it would be mascara. My makeup routine is pretty simple anyway, but mascara is the one thing that makes me feel put together. Without it I feel I look sleepy, tired, and unnoticeable. Some girls would pick lipstick or blush, but I am firmly in the mascara camp.

#8 Sriracha

My hot sauce of choice is Sriracha. Some people love Tabasco, or Frank’s Red Hot, but not me. The blend of sweet and spicy is just too awesome. Even though we traveled the whole summer, we stayed in Airbnbs and cooked in a lot. I was always just a bit happier when I could start my morning with eggs topped with Sriracha. Nom, nom, nom…

#9 Toothbrush

This one was not immediately apparent to me, but after thinking about my daily routine, I came to the conclusion that my toothbrush is one of those things I do not want to live without. While I could skip a shower here or there (sorry, TMI?) I could not skip brushing my teeth for a day. Just the thought makes me want to go brush my teeth now.

#10 Sunshine

Okay, so I am assuming that if I was stuck on a deserted island, sunshine would be in steady supply (unless I was in the extreme north or south). And I also realize that this is not a thing that I own. But, over the past few winters, my husband and I have come to realize that we are happier, work better, and are more productive when the sun is out. So, if it is within my power, blue skies and sunshine are on my list of things I do not want to live without.

Thanks for indulging me while I shared my list of ten must haves. This is a super fun game to play with your family (and friends too). You might just be surprised by the things others find important in their lives.

How about you? I’d love to know what’s on your list of 10 things you can’t live without. Let me know in the comments below.

Cheers!
